High Asbestos Rates in the East of England, New Study Finds

Asbestos Sampling has released new data from a comprehensive study involving 5,338 asbestos samples collected across the UK in 2023. This analysis reveals significant regional differences in asbestos presence, with homes in the East of England showing the highest rates.

The study found that 38% of samples from the East of England tested positive for asbestos, which is considerably higher than the UK-wide average of 30%. Other regions with notable findings include the South East and South West, both recording a 36% positivity rate, and Wales at 34%. In contrast, Northern Ireland had the lowest detection rate, with just 13% of samples confirming the presence of asbestos. The East Midlands also reported lower levels, with a 21% positive testing rate.

The collected samples were sourced from different materials, such as Artex, cement pipes, cement roofing, and floor tiles. The analysis indicated that cement roofing had the highest asbestos content, with 64% testing positive. There were also significant findings in cement pipes and floor tiles, with positivity rates of 57% and 43% respectively. The least affected were insulation samples, with only 2% showing asbestos presence.

Stephen Roche, Co-founder of Asbestos Sampling, noted:

“Our analysis of materials tested for asbestos during 2023 shows significant regional variations, with the East of England emerging as the region most likely to have asbestos present. That said, asbestos remains a concern for the health of individuals up and down the UK, serving as a stark reminder of the need to be vigilant for its presence. We would encourage anyone due to undertake work on a property which could contain asbestos to get an asbestos survey carried out before that work commences.”

    Tom Yates, Co-founder, further explained:

“We are unsure of the reason behind the regional variations. The data being presented in our findings is restricted to samples submitted to us and may not be an accurate representation of the whole industry. As such, assumptions should never be made with materials which could contain asbestos, regardless of which region they are found – Always have suspect materials tested before working on them”
