Nearly £1 Million Price Tag on “Demanding” Terraced House Draws Criticism Despite Being Marketed as a “Blank Canvas”

A mid-terraced house, listed for just under £1 million despite its “demanding condition,” has sparked criticism from potential homebuyers.

From the exterior, the four-bedroom property appears rather unassuming. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes evident that the back garden is overrun with weeds, overtaking the patio tiles and borders.

Inside, the lounge showcases a well-worn carpet and outdated decor, mirroring the state of one of the bedrooms. The kitchen, measuring a mere 6 feet 8 inches by 9 feet 3 inches, offers limited space, and a chest freezer is positioned awkwardly, blocking the doorway in one of the downstairs rooms.

The property, situated in Tooting, south London, is currently on the market for £925,000, with estate agents openly acknowledging its “demanding” condition. In estate agent lingo, such a description typically implies that the property poses a challenge and requires substantial renovation work.

The property listing also touts it as a “blank canvas,” a term often used to signify that significant improvements are needed.

This listing has drawn a fair share of sarcasm and criticism from potential buyers. Nick Stylianou exclaimed, “‘Blank canvas’ because no-one will have any money left.” Joe Moloney added, “A bargain when you consider there is no need for decoration.” Another commenter chimed in, “Rare to find a house that doesn’t need a thing doing to it.”

One commenter named Sarah humorously remarked, “Well, this seems fairly priced.” Sue pointed out, “It’d buy you two houses that size, each with about ten acres of land in Shropshire.” Katherine expressed surprise, saying, “‘In exacting condition,’ not heard that before.” Another individual questioned, “A 6ft kitchen AND you’d have to live in Tooting?” One more person added, “I like Tooting but I would not want to spend nearly a million quid to live there.”

Dexters estate agents are responsible for the sale, with the property’s key features listed as follows: “Blank canvas, south-facing garden, four bedrooms, chain-free, desirable location, potential to extend, subject to planning permission.”

The full listing description reads: “A rarely available four-bedroom freehold home in exacting condition throughout with an abundance of scope for further alterations and extensions, STPP, occupying a sought-after plot in Tooting Bec. The property benefits from a large south-facing garden and is being sold chain-free. Lucien Road is one of the most desirable roads in Tooting Bec with excellent proximity to the many shops, bars, and restaurants Tooting and Balham town centers have to offer. The vast transport links of Tooting Bec Underground Station and green open spaces of Tooting Bec Common are also within walking distance.”
