The ONS data below shows that 13 per cent of all sales in the UK happened in December last year – nearly £42 billion of sales (Dec 2014: 5 week month). Obviously that’s not all Christmas shopping but it shows how critical the trading period is to many retailers and why they invest so much time in attracting customers with advertising, diverse ranges and appealing promotions in-store and online.

HOW MUCH WILL PEOPLE BE SPENDING?

Research found that families expect to spend £796 on average celebrating Christmas this year, with one in six people having already started their festive shopping. Cards and decorations are expected to cost them £41 on average, a saving of five per cent compared with last year, while around £596 will be spent on gifts, which is one per cent less than last year’s expected spend. More than two-thirds (71 per cent) of households who celebrate Christmas plan to shop online this year. YouGov, an organisation that conducts household spending surveys will be releasing a survey closer to Christmas.
