Artificial intelligence is now shaping almost every stage of the UK hiring process, according to new findings from CMD Recruitment, with significant consequences for both businesses and job applicants.
The agency’s latest insights reveal that AI technologies are now routinely applied across recruitment workflows, including CV shortlisting, candidate identification, first-round video interviews and data-led hiring predictions.
The shift mirrors a wider transformation across the sector as automation becomes standard practice. Dan Barfoot, Operations Manager at CMD Recruitment said:
“Artificial intelligence is now a routine part of recruitment rather than a future concept. These insights show that while AI is helping employers streamline processes, it is also changing what candidates need to do to be recognised at the earliest stages of hiring.”
CMD Recruitment reports that applicant tracking systems powered by AI frequently review CVs before they are passed to decision-makers.
Such systems assess alignment with job criteria, keyword optimisation and overall document presentation when determining suitability.
This means that how a CV is structured and tailored can significantly influence whether an applicant progresses further.
The analysis also identifies a sustained rise in AI-supported video interviewing, particularly during early filtering stages and within high-volume recruitment campaigns.
Candidates are typically invited to record answers to set questions, which are then assessed using software that examines communication quality and response organisation.
Although this approach offers efficiency benefits for employers, candidate responses to AI-driven interviews remain divided.
The agency additionally highlights increasing reliance on predictive hiring analytics, which draw on historical workforce data to anticipate metrics such as employee retention and long-term fit.
Meanwhile, sourcing practices are becoming more data-driven, with AI systems scanning online professional networks and databases to identify potential applicants, including passive candidates.
As a result, jobseekers are encouraged to maintain detailed and updated professional profiles to improve their visibility.
CMD Recruitment emphasises that AI is currently being used to support and enhance recruitment administration rather than replace human involvement. Nevertheless, it warns that those who do not adapt their CV strategies and digital presence may struggle to compete in an increasingly technology-driven hiring environment.
