More Housing Needs to be Built

This government’s claims that it has seen a huge development in the amount of housing levels in this country does not corroborate with the evidence at hand and it is clear that more needs to be devoted towards building homes. With the increase of private landlord acquisitions of properties making profit from their tenants, it is absolutely appalling that there is not enough council territory that has a hold over properties. The benefits of having more council-owned homes would help to ensure that people all over the country would be able to live in affordable housing rather than submit to the often outrageous amounts of rent that landlords charge on their tenants. Similarly, it would mean clearer paperwork for the various tenant-landlord contractual agreements, since a council could maintain the same contractual agreement across all of its owned properties.

This conservative government has clearly not done nearly enough to cope with the housing shortages in this country and it is a sign of the failures of privatization when reports indicate that even landlords are investing less and less in property development. Even with the rise in first-time buyers of properties all over the country, the current fluctuations of the property market are so great and unpredictable that it is impossible to tell where the future of housing lies in the next few years under a Tory government. It is evident however that so far not enough has been done to try and inject investment and growth into the property and development industries.

The resulting damage of this is an increased tension between landlord and tenant relations as well as lasting unhappiness for communities around the country that do not have the financial resources to cope with the wild ravings of the housing market. Clearly, more needs to be done in order to ensure that councils are given more opportunities to invest and improve the conditions of social housing in this country.
