The New Simon Sainsbury Centre in Cambridge Is Open

Stirling Prize winning architect, Stanton Williams, has added a £21.5 million expansion to Cambridge University Judge Business School, turning the former hospital building into a new Simon Sainsbury Centre. It will provide an additional 5,000 square metres of teaching, meeting, and dining space.

The project was partly supported by a generous donation from the Monument Trust, which was founded by Simon Sainsbury, one of the Business School’s original benefactors. The new Centre will offer a physical space for students, executives, corporate partners, alumni, and others to collaborate.

The space includes two new lecture theatres, breakout rooms, faculty offices, and new dining facilities, all aiming to serve all parts of the Cambridge Judge community, including degree students, Executive Education clients, faculty, and external partners.

“The new building brings together all parts of our community under one roof while maintaining our position at the heart of the Cambridge Cluster. In doing so, it will enable us to continue solving real-world problems in even more diverse and creative ways,” said Professor Christoph Loch, Dean of Cambridge Judge Business School.

In 1991, Cambridge University donors Sir Paul Judge and Simon Sainsbury commissioned John Outram to redesign the former hospital building so that it elevates the civic responsibility of education and business in Cambridge. Now, Stanton Williams, offered another stage in the architectural history of the Cambridge Judge Business School site that has grown from a hospital to a business school to a global centre.

“The Simon Sainsbury Centre embodies the identity of the School whilst fulfilling its contemporary needs, adding a further layer to the progressive transformation of this historic site,” said Gavin Henderson, Director at Stanton Williams.
