Spurn National Nature Reserve Is Under Development With A New Discovery Centre

Spurn National Nature Reserve is under development, with the addition of a new Discovery Centre. The development will be located on the most northern point of the Nature Reserve and it is thought that the new site will be a popular entry point to the location for visitors. The new Visitor’s Centre will be located outside of the Site of Special Scientific Interest at the Nature Reserve and hopefully relieving the pressure on the fragile landscape visitors can have.

The development has been underway since May, with essential groundwork’s and foundations being built. The main building is being build off sita and then delivered in order to cut down any disruption that the construction work could have. The new Visitor’s Centre in the East Riding has been developed for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

The purpose built visitors facility will be built in modular units that have been delivered by Actavo Building Solutions.  On the site, work has been carried out in order to create a flood-resilient lower floor that will be covered by recycled concrete gabion baskets. The work on the Discovery centre is being carried out by the principal contractor Houlton.

Once the Discovery Centre is complete, there will be features such as a living roof in order to attract local wildlife, and bird-friendly glazed pales that will offer the visitors to the centre amazing views of the estuary.

There have been a number of changes made to the environment have occurred since a major storm surge in 2013. Because of these changes there have been new and unseen before challenges for the wildlife in the area. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has been working to protect the local wildlife and make sure that those who visit the site are kept safe, especially because of the unpredictable tidal areas that can cut off the reserve from the mainland.
