There has been a development on the building project at Birmingham City University. The £31 million university development has seen the Curzon B Building enter the final stages of the building project.

In a traditional ‘topping out’ ceremony attended by the contractor Wilmott Dixon and staff and students of the University to celebrate the step forward in the development. The development is a 100,000 sq. ft. extension to the original Curzon Building. This extension will accommodate 3,000 staff and students.

Under construction since May 2016, this large investment and development is reaching the end stages of the Curzon B project. As part of the ‘topping out’ ceremony, a tree was planted by Wilmott Dixon and University staff in accordance with the ceremony’s heritage. The ‘topping out’ ceremony has Scandinavian origin, and was originally practiced in order to appease tree-dwelling spirits.

The project should be completed and open for use by the members of the University later this year. As part of the project, the Built Environment Faculty of the University have been working alongside Wilmott Dixon in order to gain real-life experience of working within the construction industry. This is a valuable opportunity for students to put classroom theory to the test and to gain relevant experience to their course.

The new building is part of the continuous development undertake by the University in order to provide the best facilities for the staff and students while they study.  It is hoped that the area of Birmingham City will continue to develop as it has done over the past few years with the development of services like HS2 and Midland Metro on the way.

Another part of the ceremony involved other faculties of the University, with Two students from the Creative Writing course being asked to write pieces to be performed for the attendees of the ceremony for the new building.

Birmingham City University intend on investing £260 million in order to provide state of the art facilities for its members.
