Civil Engineering Merit Awards Held Annually by the East Midlands ICE

The Civil Engineering Merit Awards held annually by the East Midlands ICE, or Institute of Civil Engineering took place on the 9th of June. The black tie event was attended by Tim Broyd, the President for ICE 2016-17. The Merit Awards took place at the Belfry in Nottingham and the awards scheme has been created in order to celebrate innovation in the civil engineering industry.

The Awards celebrate excellence shown throughout the industry in the East Midlands, South East and South West of the country. This year there were thirty two different projects that applied to be considered for the Civil Engineering Merit Awards. These projects were able to apply for up to three categories, and the projects were then assessed by a panel of judges that decided on the awards. The possible awards up for grabs were Commended and Highly Commended. The panel of judges included a mixture of experienced civil engineers and students. The Chair of the panel was Ray Dickinson the ICE East Midlands Chair. On the judging panel were members of the ICE East Midlands Graduates & Students Committee alongside a number of experienced civil engineers.

The categories available for entry were: Studies & Research; Team Achievement; Small Projects that were valued at less than £750,000; Medium Projects valued between £750,000 and £10 Million; and Large projects valued above £10 million.

The Civil Engineering Merit Awards 2017 is considered to be the main occasion for the Institute to be able to highlight the benefits that are offered to a range of different sectors by the civil engineering community. The Awards also look to recognise the achievements and innovations that have occurred over the past year in the industry.

There was one award that was given this year that is not an annual occurrence. The William Kemp Award is only awarded occasionally in order to highlight the exceptional work an individual has carried out throughout their career. The Award is meant to be that bit extra special in order to truly acknowledge the outstanding contribution to the industry.
