The Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) has released its Market Information Service (MIS) report for the first quarter of 2024.

The report estimates the value of the Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) market at £224.5 million for Q1 2024, marking a 4.2% increase from the previous quarter. This growth defies the downturn indicated by the ONS Construction Output data in the key sectors of the BEMS industry for the same period.

Moreover, the year-to-date value of the BEMS sector stands at approximately £856.4 million, reflecting a 2% increase from the previous rolling year figure.

The quarterly MIS report provides BCIA members with insights into market trends and growth, segmenting the BEMS market into three key components: Product, Installation Value Added, and Service & Maintenance.

    Product

The total value of products supplied to the market in Q1 2024 rose by 1.8% compared to the previous quarter, reaching £42.4 million. The primary route to market is through system installers, which saw a 3.3% increase.

Both distributors and OEMs also experienced growth. However, product installed via manufacturers’ own systems saw a significant decline of 54.4%, though this represents a small portion of the overall market.

    Installation Value Added

The value added through engineering, commissioning, panels, and installation increased by 2.6% from the last quarter, totalling £122.8 million in Q1 2024. The rolling year total also saw a 1.1% rise, amounting to £476.0 million.

    Service & Maintenance

Service and maintenance revenue for the UK market reached £59.3 million in Q1 2024, up 9.4% from the last quarter and 12.0% for the rolling year. Manufacturers’ contributions increased by 27.2%, while systems installers saw a 6.3% rise.

Produced quarterly, the MIS report is a valuable tool for BCIA members, providing detailed insights into the BEMS market and highlighting growth trends in product supply, installation value added, and service & maintenance.

BCIA President Stacey Lucas highlights the importance of providing members with regular market updates. She said: “The Building Controls industry is experiencing phenomenal growth, now worth at least £840m per year and supporting thousands of highly skilled, knowledge-led jobs. The MIS is the only research of its type and provides valuable insights on the value and volume of our sector.

“Reports are produced quarterly and available exclusively to BCIA members. The more members that contribute and provide feedback helps ensure the reports continue to be robust and grow in value for the benefit of all members, whether a manufacturer or SI. Together our voice is stronger.”

As one of the leading voices of the UK building controls sector, the BCIA’s influence is continuing to grow, with another 17 companies taking up membership in the first quarter of 2024. Offering members the chance to work collaboratively to shape a more sustainable future, as well as influence and shape policy and legislation, the BCIA helps to promote a much wider understanding of building controls and the benefits they bring.
