The opening date of a new IKEA store in Birmingham city centre has been announced, with the first city based Order and Collection Point store set to open later in the month.

Situated at Dale End, the Central Order and Collection Point will open on August 18 and will be only the third of its kind in the UK, along with Aberdeen and Norwick, and the first to be built in a city centre.

The new store is set to offer a new way to shop at the Swedish home furnishing store, which will be much more convenient for city centre customers who will no longer have to travel to their nearest store in Wednesbury, although it will not carry the full range of products as it is a much smaller store.

However, customers will be able to order all the products from the Ikea online range for home delivery or from the store, with customers even able to drive up to the collection point.

The store will open at the former home of Toys R Us in the city centre which has been empty for nearly a decade.

Meanwhile, the Swedish furniture giant has also suggested that it may be opening a new store in Sussex, amid rumours that the company may build on land owned by Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club.

A spokesman for the firm said that they have been evaluating various potential sites for a store in the county, commenting: “At this stage we are only making preliminary enquiries and have nothing further to confirm.”

The site is found at New Monks Farm, just to the north of the football club’s elite football performance centre and, according to records from Companies House, the site’s registered address was changes to the club’s AMEX Stadium on April 7.
