Kirklees parks and greenspaces have once again been recognised amongst the country’s best parks, retaining their Green Flag Awards.
An international quality mark for parks and green spaces, the Green Flag Award has been awarded to Beaumont Park, Greenhead Park, Castle Hill, Crow Nest Park and Wilton Park. Oakwell Hall and Country Park has also achieved Green Flag status for its twenty first year in a row.
This accolade is testament to the continued hard work and dedication of the Parks and Greenspaces Team along with support from volunteers and friends of parks groups ensuring residents and visitors alike can enjoy them at their best.
Councillor Amanda Pinnock, Cabinet Member for Communities and Environment said: “I am delighted that we have once again received Green Flag Award status for our parks and greenspaces in Kirklees. We are very fortunate to have access to so much greenspace, including several parks which are managed and maintained by the council.
“The Green Flag Award status is testament to the dedication of our staff, and also the wider community and volunteers that keep our greenspaces tidy, accessible, and beautiful. Our parks are where people come to meet friends, to play and learn, to keep active, or to enjoy events – they play a vital part in helping communities to thrive and are often at the heart of many areas.”
Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in recognised parks who have worked tirelessly to ensure that they achieve the high standards required for the Green Flag Award.
“Quality parks and green spaces like these make the country a healthier place to live and work in, and a stronger place in which to invest. Crucially, these parks and greenspaces are vital for communities in Kirklees to enjoy nature, and during the ongoing cost of living crisis it is a free and safe space for families to socialise. It also provides important opportunities for local people and visitors to reap the physical and mental health benefits of green space.”
The Green Flag Award scheme is managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government. The scheme recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the UK and around the world.
