The Cumbernauld Academy and Cumbernauld Theatre Campus development project has taken a step forward with ground officially being broken as part of an event last week. On the 7th September, the progress was marked with a sod cutting ceremony. In attendance and leading the ceremony was John Swinney MSP, the Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills.

The project will be carried out by hub South West and will be the third large school development carried out through the partnership of hub South West Scotland and North Lanarkshire Council. The new £37 million Cumbernauld project will follow on from the successful delivery of Greenfaulds High School and Clyde Valley Campus. The partnership has made the designing and planning process for this project go smoothly by using a range of tried and tested principles.

The new campus will be based on the South Kildrum Ring Road and will have the capacity for 950 students and will see the merge of Cumbernauld High School and Abronhill High School. There planned development will also include a 400 seat replacement venue for the Cumbernauld Community Theatre currently in use.

The construction work will bring a range of opportunities to the area. The development will offer a boost for the local economy as well as providing an opportunity to increase the number of apprenticeships available in the area for young people wanting to get into the construction industry.

Hub South West Scotland is a living wage employer and ensures that at least 65% of the participation in their projects is provided by local businesses. The company has managed to develop a strong and productive relationship with a number of Tier 1 contractors and local suppliers which means that the development company is able to carry out projects in the cost effective and efficient manner. This productive relationship has led to an increase in construction efficiencies across the south west of Scotland in recent years.
