On Friday October the 13th, the topping out ceremony took place at the William McIlvanney Campus in Kilmarnock. The hub South West project has made remarkable progress as it passes this significant construction milestone. With the topping out ceremony reached, it is thought that the Campus is on track to be completed next year.

The construction work on this new educational facility will is being carried out by Kier Construction. The William McIlvanney Campus, named after the well-known author, will merge a number of schools together. Kilmarnock Academy, which was attended by campus’ eponymous author, will be merged with James Hamilton Academy. There will also be an early years and primary school area of the campus which will be used by Silverwood Primary and New Farm Primary and Early Childhood Centre that will also be combined on the new educational campus. William McIlvanney, or Willie was not only a pupil at Kilmarnock Academy, but he also went on to teach at the school later in his life.

The new educational facility in Kilmarnock will be able to accommodate 1,465 secondary school pupils as well as 383 primary school children and 80 places for both morning and afternoon early years.

Hub South West, a construction and infrastructure partnership works with forward-thinking and progressive companies and authorities in Lanarkshire, Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire. The William McIlvanney Campus in Kilmarnock is being completed for East Ayrshire Council and will be an amazing tribute to the life of the local author. The development has created a range of educational activities for students from the schools and colleges in the region who have participated in a range of project related events. There have been a range of opportunities created through the construction of this new campus for apprentices and graduates. 19 apprenticeships have been created by Kier Construction through the course of the build, as well as 16 work placements and two graduate traineeships.
