If you live in the North West of England, you already know that the weather is far from the best. It’s not only wet, cold, and windy but also unpredictable. You can have decent weather one day, and then a thunderstorm and torrential rain can strike the next.

Aside from the people who have to put up with it, what else takes the full brunt of that weather? The roof on your property. No matter where you live in the North West, whether Manchester, Liverpool, or Bolton, the weather is a big threat to your roof and even the structural integrity of your home.

Despite this, it’s also one of the most neglected parts of many people’s homes. It is the first line of defense against the unpredictable and harsh weather of the North West, but also one of the last to receive maintenance. That can eventually lead to aesthetic and structural damage that is expensive to repair.

So, how do you prevent this from happening? That’s what you’re about to find out as we present you with some essential tips to keep the roof of your North West home in tip-top shape.

    Schedule Regular Roof Cleaning

Unfortunately, there’s no hiding from the fact that the damp climate of the likes of Preston, Bradford, and Huddersfield creates the perfect environment for roof damage to occur. Moss and algae thrive in damp conditions and if left, both can lead to damage to your roof.

For one, a build-up of moss and algae can make your roof look tired and old. However, that’s the least of your worries, as both trap moisture, which can freeze and unfreeze, potentially cracking or lifting tiles. That can create leaks in your home, which can cause dampness that could put your home’s structural integrity at risk if not treated.

That’s why scheduling regular roof cleaning from North West businesses like Aarons Roof Cleaning is essential. These firms offer their services across cities like Leeds, Sheffield, and Nottingham which are known for having wet and windy weather. Just schedule a cleaning once a year, and that should be enough to keep your roof maintained.

    Inspect After Every Storm

Alongside having your roof cleaned regularly, it’s also important to inspect your roof as often as possible. Even if you’re unable to regularly inspect it, try to make sure you never forget after every storm. Cities like Liverpool and Derby are known for high winds, which, combined with rain, is one of the biggest causes of roof damage.

You don’t have to climb onto the roof or anything, just have a look to see if you can spot any missing or broken tiles, any debris on the roof, or blocked gutters.

    Keep Gutters Clear

Speaking of gutters, that brings us nicely to our final tip. You need to keep your gutters as clear as possible. Clogged gutters are a nightmare for your roof and your home’s foundation. If water cannot drain efficiently, it can build up under your roof and cause damp spots in your home.

If you have lots of trees near your home, falling leaves and moss can quickly cause your gutters to block. For that reason, you should regularly check them and have them cleared when required.

    Maintained Roof, Happy Home

At the end of the day, it comes down to this. Would you rather neglect your roof and eventually have to pay for expensive roof and home repairs, or would you rather take the time and effort to check and maintain your roof? Roof cleaning services are not expensive and you’ll usually need them once a year, while it doesn’t take a few minutes just to check your roof and guttering every now and again.
