The social housing provider, Salix Homes has announced five main contractors for the second phase of a £75 million investment. Salix Homes owns more than 8,300 homes located around Salford. The investment programme has been put in place to improve the social housing on offer around Salford. It is hoped that following this multi-million-pound investment, Salix Homes will reach the Decent Homes Standard.

The five contracts have been awarded to specialist construction companies that operate in the north west, four of which are from Greater Manchester, and one working from Warrington. Salix Homes has named these companies as the main contractor for phase two of the works, which will see £38 million invested into Salix’s Salford housing.

Emanuel Whittaker, Jackson and Jackson, The Casey Group, A. Connelly Ltd and The Bell Group will all receive a share of the investment in order to carry out the required development work and improve Salix Homes’ portfolio of properties.

In order to transform the social housing on offer in Salford, the multi-million-pound investment will see 720 homes fitted with new kitchens, 660 homes given new bathrooms, new windows put in to 700 new properties, 1,200 homes fitted with new doors and expansive refurbishments carried out to Canon Green Court in Broughton, Fitzwarren Court and Albion Towers in Pendleton.

The investment made by Salix for this project does not just involve money. In order ensure the continuous training of people across a range of construction industries, for every million pound that has been invested by Salix, two new apprenticeships will be created for people in the local areas. This investment will allow the contractors to continue to employ people from the Salford area and the three-year investment to deliver the second -phase of works will lead to improvements in the community as well as the buildings.
