    NLA : 36% Of Landlords Experience Property Abandonment

    NLA : New figures have revealed 36% of UK landlords have had a property abandoned by tenants before.

    The National Landlords Association (NLA) revealed more landlords in the North East of England experienced the problem more than anywhere else in the country, with 58% having had a property abandoned.

    In Wales, 56% of respondents said they had a property abandoned, while almost half of Scottish landlords experienced the same problem (48%).

    The lowest figure was recorded in the South West of England at 31%.

    Richard Lambert, CEO of the NLA, said the process of recovering an abandoned property was “long, frustrating and costly” for landlords.

    “Many people will be shocked by just how common this problem is, and landlords will be relieved to know that the Housing and Planning Act will create a new process to deal with the issue, giving them far greater security and peace of mind when recovering  properties they believe to have been abandoned.”

    The National Residential Landlords Association is the UK’s largest membership organisation for private residential landlords, supporting and representing over 90,000 members. The association was created from the merger of the RLA and NLA in April 2020.

    NRLA members range from full-time landlords running property portfolios to those letting single bedroom flats. Whatever their status, most landlords face the same regulatory and legal challenges, with over 150 pieces of legislation creating hundreds of legal obligations for the private residential lettings sector.
