The Shadow Housing Minister, John Healey has visited the site of a recent development. The development in Esh Winning consists of 31 bungalows designed or older people. The shadow minister met some of the new occupants of The Heathers development.

These modern bungalows located in Esh Winning, County Durham have been designed with older occupants in mind. The properties are affordable to rent and have been built by Gus Robinson Developments. The 31 bungalows have been built on a site that used to hold Hamsteels Primary School. The site has been developed by the North East housing association, Karbon Homes in order to create a number of modern properties built with older residents in mind.  Karbon is one of the largest housing associations in the region, and the company own and manage nearly 24,000 homes across the area.

Karbon Homes, which was previously Derwent Homes, has been able to use its experience in order to design and develop the bungalows in a way that will meet the needs of the prospective residents. The development was taken on while making sure the needs of the local residents were taken into consideration. The development also received more than £1 million of grant funding from the Homes and Communities Agency.

The housing development team at Karbon are expected to be delivering about 2,500 new homes around the North East of the country and will be continuing to receive funding from the Homes and Communities Agency as part of their 2016-21 funding programme. Due to this it is thought that Karbon will be managing one of the largest fund allocations from the HCA of any other housing association around the country. Both Karbon Homes and their subsidiary company, Prince Bishops Homes have been building a wide variety of different homes across the region. It is expected that any profit made by the development companies will be reinvested in order to build more affordable homes.
