Work on 75 new homes for mid-market and social rent at Greendykes in Craigmillar has begun. The development led by the City of Edinburgh Council is expected to be completed by spring 2019 and additionally, this spring the council will start the construction of 194 homes in a separate development in Craigmillar off Niddrie Mains Road. The Scottish Government has contributed to this project with £1 million.

“The project is an important part of the ongoing regeneration of the wider Craigmillar area and represents over £9m of investment. The new homes will be a mix of one, two and three bedroom flats, which will be available for mid-market and social rent from autumn 2018,” said Councillor Gavin Barrie, the council’s housing and economy convener.

He also added that the newly agreed council budget “reinforced our commitment to our ambitious house building programme to deliver 20,000 new affordable and low-cost homes over the next 10 years along with our housing association partners, making this one of the largest council-led house building programmes in the UK”.

The build is led by CCG (Scotland) Ltd, which has recently completed a 94 home affordable housing project at Leith Fort. The firm is currently building a 111 home residential development for Dunedin Canmore, which is set to be completed this spring. Previous work includes The Schoolhouse, a 66 mixed tenure home development and the Thistle Centre for Health and Wellbeing in Craigmillar.

“Through our offsite construction capabilities, we will deliver the new homes faster, to a higher quality standard and with an enhanced level of environmental performance. We also have a commitment to supporting the surrounding community through the creation of job and training opportunities as well as supporting local charities,” commented Calum Murray, director of CCG.

The first homes will commence construction in March 2018.
