G F Tomlinson Begins Work on Bentley Primary Care Centre
Midlands-based contractor G F Tomlinson has commenced construction on the new £7 million Bentley Primary Care Centre in Doncaster — a landmark development set to transform local healthcare provision and deliver significant social and economic value to the community.
Located on Chapel Street, at the heart of Bentley, the three-storey, 1,215m² facility will consolidate vital healthcare and community services under one roof. Designed to serve as a modern, integrated hub, the centre will support the City of Doncaster Council’s drive for improved primary care access and service delivery. Construction funding is provided by NHS England, with NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) responsible for the ongoing revenue support once the scheme is complete.
Modern Design for Integrated Healthcare
Set for completion in spring 2026, the new centre will unite two existing GP practices — Don Valley Healthcare and The Ransome Practice — within a contemporary, purpose-built environment designed for future-ready healthcare. The scheme aligns with the NHS Long Term Plan, a 10-year strategy focusing on technology-driven efficiency and the modernisation of primary care infrastructure.
Developed on the former site of Bentley Community Library, which has now been cleared, the new steel-framed building will feature a mix of brickwork and cladding, creating a civic identity that reflects its community role. G F Tomlinson is delivering the project under a design-and-build contract, with external works completing the transformation of the site.
Sustainability and Social Value at the Core
Targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating, the facility incorporates a range of sustainable features, including rooftop photovoltaic panels, electric vehicle charging points, and integrated bird and bat boxes to enhance local biodiversity. The project also champions social value initiatives, providing apprenticeships, work experience for local students, and collaboration with local supply chains and VCSE organisations throughout construction.
Industry Collaboration
The project team includes P+HS Architects as lead designer, Sewell Advisory as project manager, and Bridges Pound providing structural, civil, and geotechnical engineering services. Key stakeholders also include NHS South Yorkshire ICB and the two GP practices set to occupy the centre.
Building Healthier Communities
Adrian Grocock, Managing Director at G F Tomlinson, commented:
“We’re delighted to partner with City of Doncaster Council on this much-needed healthcare development for the Bentley community. As our first collaboration with the council, it represents an exciting opportunity to deliver lasting social impact while strengthening our healthcare portfolio following recent projects such as Greenwood House Medical Centre in Stafford and West Bridgford Medical Centre in Nottingham.”
Anthony Fitzgerald, Executive Place Director for Doncaster at NHS South Yorkshire, added:
“This new, state-of-the-art facility will ensure the Bentley area is served by high-quality, efficient healthcare that meets the needs of local people.”
Councillor James Church, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Public Health at City of Doncaster Council, said:
“This project marks an important step in improving access to healthcare right in the heart of our community — a vital element of creating healthy, sustainable neighbourhoods for the future.”
