Home security experts warn of growing risks as climate events intensify and thefts spike by 17%

    Key Findings:

    • Expert warns extreme weather events increasingly threatening home security systems across Australia, as thefts spike by 17% in last 12 months
    • Home security specialists reveal snow, ice, storms, heavy rain, and extreme heat can all cause damage to security systems, with power outages an additional risk
    • As Australia experiences record-breaking temperatures, security experts urge homeowners to implement protective measures like weatherproofing and backup power solutions

As extreme weather events become more frequent and intense across Australia, with last year’s winter the warmest on record, experts are warning that home security systems are increasingly at risk of damage or malfunction, potentially leaving homes vulnerable to burglaries.

Burglaries have been steadily increasing across Australia, with a 17% increase in theft offences recorded in the last 12 months, making the need for vigilance and a functioning home security system more urgent than ever. The combination of rising theft rates and increasingly severe weather events creates a perfect storm for homeowners.

“Many people don’t realise that their security and garage door systems can be compromised by extreme weather conditions, leaving their homes exposed to potential break-ins,” explain garage security experts from B&D Australia, a leading manufacturer of garage doors. “That’s why it’s important to ensure you have complete control over your garage door with a battery backup.” B&D Australia lists some of the ways that extreme weather events can affect security systems, and provides tips for homeowners to protect their systems at home.

    Snow and Ice

Snow and ice can obscure camera lenses and weigh down mounting brackets, potentially causing them to fall.  “The freeze-thaw cycle can also create cracks in casings, allowing water to enter and damage electrical components,” say B&D’s experts. Cold weather can also reduce battery efficiency and cause moving parts to become sluggish, affecting the overall functionality of the system.

    Storms and Lightning

Strong winds can displace cameras, and lightning strikes can cause power surges that may destroy systems or start fires. Lightning strikes pose another threat, as they can destroy systems outright or cause fires through power surges.

“If a storm causes your power to go out, a high-quality garage battery back up will automatically engage, so you can shelter safely until the worst of it passes,” experts at B&D note.

    Heavy Rain and Moisture

As extreme rain events and flash floods become more frequent, ensuring that systems are watertight is essential.  “Rain and moisture can infiltrate security systems, causing short circuits and malfunctions,” explains the B&D team. “Moisture can also lead to corrosion of metal parts, shortening the lifespan of the equipment.”

    Extreme Heat

On the other end of the weather spectrum, extreme heat can significantly impact the performance of home security systems. “High temperatures can cause components to overheat, leading to malfunctions or even permanent damage,” B&D says. “Heat accelerates wear and tear on devices, potentially melting parts or causing electronic failures.” They add that Wireless security systems can also be affected by heat.

    Power Outages

Severe weather often leads to power outages, as was seen with the storm in Victoria earlier this year that left 530,000 homes without power. Power cuts make homes vulnerable if security systems lack a reliable backup power source. “Thieves may exploit these power cuts, knowing that security systems are likely compromised,” says B&D.

B&D Garage Doors’ Recommendations for Protecting Home Security Systems

In response to these risks, B&D Australia offers several solutions to mitigate the impact of weather on home security systems:

Regular Maintenance: Conduct regular checks to ensure all components you have are completely functioning correctly. Replace batteries nearing the end of their lifespan, especially before the onset of extreme weather.

Weatherproofing: Invest in weather-resistant enclosures for outdoor cameras and sensors. Protective coverings shield equipment from harsh conditions, extending their operational life.

System Upgrades: Upgrade to smart technology that allows remote monitoring and control. Smart systems can adjust settings automatically in response to environmental changes and maintain optimal performance.

Backup Power Solutions: Make sure your security system has a backup power source, such as a generator or battery backup, to maintain functionality during power outages.

A spokesperson for B&D Australia commented:

“The intersection of climate change and home security is a growing concern that homeowners are likely to overlook. Weather-related damage to security and garage door systems can significantly increase a home’s vulnerability to break-ins.

“We strongly advise homeowners to conduct bi-annual checks on their security and garage door systems, focusing on weatherproofing and backup power solutions. Additionally consider the strength and security of your garage door and consider upgrading to smart and reliable options that can adapt to environmental changes.”
