The University of Wolverhampton has announced the launch of a new Demolition Management Master’s Degree. Created in collaboration with the Institute of Demolition Engineers, or IDE, the Master’s Degree course will be the first of its kind in the UK and will seek to improve the professionalism of the sector.

The course will start in September and one of the first to sign up for the Master’s was Richard Dolman from AR Demolition. Working at the local Nuneaton based company has said that he is interested in gaining a qualification in his occupation. The new course will hopefully work to draw more young people to the sector and help to plug the skills gap present in this area. This new course is perfect for students looking to specialise before embarking on a career as well as those already working in the industry who have been uninterested in academics in the past, but looking to gain a formal qualification to support their work.

The new Master’s Degree course in Demolition Management has received accreditation from the Institute of Demolition Engineers, and has taken two years of planning discussions between the curriculum delivery team and key individuals from the industry to design the course. This course was conceived following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding that took place between the University of Wolverhampton and the IDE which took place last September. This Memorandum illustrated a commitment from both parties to offer more opportunities for students and existing practitioners.

Ten people so far have signed up for the Master’s course which will be held at the University’s City Campus at the School of Architecture and Built Environment. In time the course will move to the Springfield campus. The course will be made up of 15 different modules that will cover a range of different topics, from asbestos removal and façade retention as well as working with explosives and health and safety.
