The former site of a Shell petrol filling station on 262 York Road has been given revised planning approval. The nine-storey building on York Road in Battersea is the last site to receive planning approval for the Battersea Reach, and the last site to be developed.

Battersea Reach is a development programme that is taking place looking out onto the River Thames. The final project to be developed has used the expertise of the multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Meinhardt UK. This York Road project is the second development of its kind to use Meinhardt UK at a pre-planning stage. The first site was Greenford Green in Ealing and is the largest purpose built build to rent scheme in the UK.

Meinhardt have been using their knowledge of modern construction methods and structural engineering in order to advise on the challenges facing the development of the former petrol station. The previous use of the site has led to a number of challenges such as contamination.

Planning was initially granted for the space that was situated above the petrol station however the client delayed and decided to purchase the lease of the petrol station on the ground floor of the site and demolish it. This planning permission was granted for a building that has around 10,000 sq. m. of floor space. The site will be used for a twin wall construction frame with penthouse flats on the top level and further residential units underneath. The acquisition of the petrol station has added an extra nine units of residential space to the project.

Now that planning permission has been granted and the methods of development have been agreed on the client, Angle Property will be looking to tender for contracts, with work starting on the site in early 2018.

Meinhardt UK is one of the leading engineering consultancy company around the world. The company work in London and provides the engineering services  in civil, structural and building services as well as facade and other related engineering disciplines to their clients.
