    • Interior trends expert at Tapi Carpets & Floors, Johanna Constantinou, has shared her tips to help you decorate your home for Christmas without causing any damage.
Decorating your home for Christmas is a tradition that transforms your living space into a festive and cosy haven. Searches for ‘Christmas décor ideas’ are up by +656% in the past three months1. Whether you prefer a classic, modern, rustic, or whimsical style, the process of decorating can be enjoyable, but sometimes it can cause damage to your home’s interior if not executed correctly. By using the right techniques and materials, you can create a magical holiday atmosphere while keeping your walls, furniture, and fixtures safe. Luckily, trends expert at Tapi Carpets & Floors, Johanna Constantinou, has shared her tips to help you decorate without any long-lasting damage.
    1. Opt for freestanding and lightweight decorations
“Invest in freestanding items like tabletop trees, holiday figurines, and lanterns. These decorations eliminate the need for hooks, screws, or sticky adhesives, which can damage paint, leave residue, or create holes in walls. Use lightweight ornaments and garlands to reduce strain on hooks or fixtures; these are also less likely to scratch or dent surfaces. Lightweight garlands can be draped over stair bannisters or furniture without causing scratches, and pre-lit faux greenery can be laid along countertops or bookshelves for a festive touch without adhesive,” says Johanna.
    2. Add barriers between decoration and furniture
Ensure your surfaces and floors are protected by adding barriers between decorations and furniture. Johanna recommends to “Use felt pads or coasters under heavy items like candle holders or statues to prevent scratches and dents”. If you’re displaying a Christmas tree on carpet or laminate, place a waterproof mat or tree skirt underneath to catch water spills, sap, or fallen needles. For delicate flooring, rugs or mats, Johanna suggests to “add a decorative and protective layer, especially in high-traffic areas where festive décor might be bumped or shifted”.
    3. Choose non-damaging hanging solutions
When hanging decorations, choose mounting tools designed to leave no residue or marks on surfaces. “Adhesive hooks, such as Command Strips or Clips, are excellent for securing garlands, wreaths, or string lights on walls, doors, or mantels without nails or screws. For windows or mirrors, suction cups work effectively to hold lightweight ornaments or signs,” advises Johanna. “On doors, opt for over-the-door wreath hangers instead of drilling holes, ensuring your doors remain pristine. Always check the weight limit of these tools to avoid accidents or damage”, she adds.
    4. Create ‘floating’ displays
“Instead of relying on traditional wall-mounted décor, use creative alternatives like ‘floating’ decorations. Suspend ornaments, snowflakes, or stars from the ceiling using fishing lines and removable adhesive hooks. This creates a magical ‘floating’ effect without attaching anything directly to walls or surfaces. Alternatively, invest in a freestanding mobile or branch display that you can decorate with lightweight baubles,” says Johanna.
    5. Use projection lighting
Rather than installing complex lighting setups, use projection lights to cast festive patterns across your walls or ceiling. Indoor projectors can display snowflakes, stars, or even moving Christmas-themed images, creating a stunning visual effect without attaching anything to your walls or furniture. “Place the projector on a stable surface or tripod, and you’ve instantly transformed your space into a holiday wonderland without risking damage to paint, wallpaper, or other finishes,” says Johanna.
Johanna concludes, “When decorating your home for Christmas, it’s essential to balance festive cheer with practical care, especially for your floors. Simple precautions, like ensuring no sharp or heavy objects are dragged across flooring surfaces, will prevent scratches, dents, or stains. Protecting your flooring ensures that your space remains beautiful long after the festive period is over.”
